Sivaji - Most complete Thalaivar movie ever

Just got back from watching Sivaji. It is 1 am here and more importantly, Iam just too excited to write a coherent review. So, just penning down my random thoughts before I hopefully get to write a full-fledged review soon:

Thalaivar was wrong. He said that Sivaji is 10 times better than his most favorite film, Baashaa. But I have to disagree with him. Sorry Thalaivaa, Sivaji is 100 times better than Baashaa. With Sivaji, Thalaivar has a new problem at hand. Seriously, there is no way any other director can even think about making a movie that is remotely as electric and powerful as Sivaji. Post-Sivaji, Thalaivar is like a mountaineer who has climbed Mt. Everest. What other peak is there on the face of this earth that could challenge him? And most probably that would excite us watching him undertake that challenge?

The Adhiradi song along is 10 times the worth the price of your ticket. Shankar proves why he is the undisputed king when it comes to songs picturization. If you thought the picturization of Kannum kannum Nokia was mind-blowing, it is safe to say that you are not ready for Adhiradi yet. It will go down as one of the best picturized songs of Tamil cinema.

Thalaivar looks amazing throughout the movie. I loved the second half hairstyle better than the ones he sports in the first half. Mottai boss simply rocks.

I simply loved the first half. Comedy was so enjoyable. Vivek was at his hilarious best.

Shreya has done her role absolutely well. She looks gorgeous.

About Thalaivar - I think it is time the folks at Webster change the meaning of the word Style. What a style…what a power-packed performance. What a screen presence. There are just too many minute things in the movie that you will have to watch the movie a good 10 times to admire each one of them and also to appreciate how much thought Shankar (and his team) have put behind each one of them.

So, where do I place Sivaji? Dare I say it? Yes, I am going to say it. Sivaji is THE BEST Thalaivar film ever. Period. And I am sure there is absolutely no way that there can be a better Thalaivar film than Sivaji (unless of course Shankar decides to cast Thalaivar in)

I think some Satyajit Ray fan wrongly went to a Superstar movie. He looked for things that he should not look at in a Superstarer. Read the different strokes at this site:

But, I salute Rajini and Shankar and all the crew for making such a commercial success. We need these big hits and entertainers.

Filby,

How does it stack up against Baasha?

Has it overtaken it..For I consider Baasha to be the benchmark for all Thalaivar movies.

Filby,

Most of the reviews I heard (from my friends who are not diehard Rajini fans) were mixed. Surprised to see you declare this is the best Rajini movie ever.

Usually all of your reviews reflect my thoughts. Let me see how this one matches. Have to wait till tuesday...Sigh!!!!

Filbert,

I agree with you on most of the things you have said. The only thing I would say though is that in substance Sivaji cannot compete with Baasha. But Sivaji is the ultimate in Style, Rajini's performance and Song picturisation.

The one question that everybody are asking is, what about the logic flaws and other complaints.

For all those, here is the reply

Yes there are some downsides in the film. But with the amount of expectation/Hype that this film had it would have been close to impossible to make a film with no complaints.

The effort of Shankar is visible throughout the film and the Grandeur in the songs have to be seen to be beleived (except maybe Ballelakka).

It is a 3 hr long movie but when we were watching the movie, there was not a moment when we were not entertained. Total paisa vasool.

As Filbert said, I cannot think of anyone other than (Shankar/Mani rathnam) that can actually make a better overall movie.

So the only logical next question is , will this be THALAIVAR'S LAST FILM?

paathuten.. motcham adanjitten..

"style iseekoltu thalaivar"

what an intro in Adhiradi song !!!
whole song ROCKS.. what sets for aambal/vaaji song.. what a gr8 line of comedy throughout the movie.. the scene just after the interval with suman in front of IT office.. and the climax fight... can't explain it in words.. the mottai boss getup... the final dialogue of thalaivar in the climax... "idha kooda ne eduthuttu poga mudiyaadhu"..

couldnt have come up with a better one.. only sujatha can write it so crisp and apt !!

overall, breathtaking experience !!

Agree with you Sathyamurthy, on those folks who go looking for logic in a Thalaivar movie. There are a few loop holes in the story but then a superstar movie is bound to have them :)

Thalaivar always says that he is in the movie business to entertain and to make money, for himself & for others. I think Sivaji has done that precisely.

Thanks Rajesh. It is definitely a movie that has quenched all Thalaivar fans' thirst. Will be waiting to hear your take on it. Cool :)

Hello "Rajni fan from Bangalore without a ticket", I do think that it has overtaken Baashaa. Do let me know if you felt the same way, whenever you get a ticket for the movie :)

Senthil, it is true that the reviews when they started coming out were mixed. But even those who had some minor grievances, had overwhelmingly positive things to say about the movie when they saw the movie the second time around. I would advise you to go to the theater without any big expectations and I can guarantee that you will come back completely satisfied.

Oors, you have said what went through my mind every time I saw it. I have seen it 4 times so far and still want to watch it more. Might catch the Telugu version next weekend :) Thalaivar simply rocks. 3 times in 3 different theaters on the same day is amazing. Kalakku oors...

Very well said, Ramesh. Thanks for typing in that long reply, as a response to those who question the lack of logic in the movie, at a few places. If the critics for one moment think about the spectrum of target audience that this film needs to satisfy, they will not be complaining. Sivaji is not the perfect movie but it will turn out to be the biggest blockbuster in the history of Tamil cinema and that is what this movie was expected to deliver.

But frankly, I do not think that this is Thalaivar's last film. There are already reports that Thalaivar's next film is in the works. Lets wait for 3-4 months and we might get the official announcement.

Kalaignar is the Thalaivar in the political circles but when it comes to movies, the Superstar is the only Thalaivar. So, how was the movie? I might watch the Telugu version this weekend.

Prin, I just posted my review where I have written about the secret. It is the rap that comes at the end of the movie when Mottai boss is introduced. That rap was composed by Blaaze.

Superb comment, Arun. That was exactly my response after I came out of the theater the first time. And each additional times I saw it, I loved the movie even more. The intro in the Adhiradi song is simplyout of the world. Only Shankar could have thought that way. I loved your one liner "style iseekoltu thalaivar" Could not be put in better words!!
