Usual Suspects of the Maestro

Alright, I am not committing a sacrilege here, for coming up with a list of the best songs of the Maestro in a single CD is nothing but that. But I am still committing it, with a silly excuse to justify it. So, picture this scenario - you have your extensive collection of the Maestro CDs in your car. But right now, you are at your friend's place for a long weekend and you have a rental car. You guys are ready to start for a road trip but wait, you do not have a Maestro CD collection in your car. For me, there can never be a road trip without a Maestro CD in my car. So, get where I am going to. This situation is where this list will come in very handy. You got to get started on your trip and only have a few minutes left which means you have time to write only one CD. (It goes without saying that the rental car does not have an auxiliary input which rules out plugging your iPod in) This situation warrants a list like this, which will save the trouble of going through your overwhelming collection of the Maestro's 800+ albums. This is one such list where when each song starts playing, you will start running out of adjectives in praising the genius of the Maestro. And this situation BTW is something that I have faced numerous times (and I am sure some of you might have faced it as well) and that is the very reason I wanted to come up with this list.

As always, I have my own pre-set conditions in arriving at this list.

1) The songs should fit in a 80 min CD.
2) No album can have more than 1 song.
3) The list shall not contain a song from a movie that was released after 1990.
4) The list shall not contain a song from a movie that was released prior to 1980.

En Iniya Pon Nilaave from Moodu Pani
Edho mogam from Kozhi Koovudhu
Idhu Oru ponmaalai from Nizhalgal
Ilaiya Nilaa from Payanangal Mudivadhillai
Keeravaani from Paadum Paravaigal
Kodiyile Malligappoo from Kadalora Kavidhaigal
Mandram vandha from Mouna Raagam
Naan thedum from Dharma Pathini
Pani Vizhum Malarvanam from Ninaivellaam Nithya
Poojaikkketha poovidhu from Neethaana Andha Kuyil
Poove Sempoove from Solla Thudikkudhu Manasu
Raja Raja Chozhan from Rettai Vaal Kuruvi
Thendral vandhu ennai thodum from Thendrale Ennai Thodu
Enna satham indha neram from Punnagai Mannan
Thulli ezhundhadhu paattu from Geethanjali
Pothi vacha malliga mottu from Mann Vaasanai

So, there goes the proverbial drop in the ocean, IMO. How will your drop from the Maestro's ocean look like?

Are you committing another sin by not including any entries from Thalaivar movie?. For the start, Kadhalin deepam ondru might fit into the list.

You mentioning andhi mazhai is just amazing, bcos when I was telling 2 of my friends about this list, the first question that they came up with was "Where is Andhi mazhai?" :) If I had the option to add one more song to the list, then that would be it.

Anon, now that is definitely a sin :) But I guess songs from Thalaivar movies will make for a separate playlist, for which I will surely come up with a post!!!

Though it is a work by the DUO (IR & MSV), mella thiranthathu kathavu's song should laways get a place i guess.

Again dunno if you had a pattern set in your mind as to the mix the genre of songs in this list, but karagattakaaran maanguyilae eh maranthuteengalae...guess this was one song which got a huge huge applause in IR's concert in chennai

Naren,

That was probably the most number of comments left by anybody for a single post on my blog :))

I agree with you that Mella Thirandhadhu Kadhavu had some amazing songs (Ooru sanam is my favorite among the lot) but had to exclude any song from the album bcos of the reason you have mentioned. Somehow, R. Sundarrajan was able to extract some mind-blowing songs from the Maestro. And I simply love the Maanguyile poonguyile song too.

I think the logic behind this list and something which I should have mentioned in the post is this: all of the numbers in the list are some of his most popular ones!!

Anyway, needless to say, all the songs in your list are awesome too. The only ones that I would probably not include in my second list are Thathom thalangu, Signorita,Appappa thithikkum and Nee Koduthadha

No Keladi Kanmani!! What a travesty. Even the Vaaranam Aayiram portion sung by S.Janaki would make my top 13. But I guess it is testament to his singular genius that there is no way to do justice to his talent in one CD.

can't really argue with your choices!Andhi Mazhai and Kaadhalin Deepam would have definitely made it into my list. Other picks would have been Poomalaiye (Pagal Nilavu), Kodai kaala kaatre (Panner Pushpangal), Thene thenpandi (Udhaya Geetham), Paruvame (Nenjathai Killathe), Aaasai nooru vagai (Aduttha Varisu)

But can't really say what I would have dropped from your list. So the best solution is to get an ipod :)

Yeah Anon, Keladi Kanmani is one awesome album and Vaaranam Aayiram is one of my all-time favorite songs too. Pudhu pudhu arthangal is another album which had 3 masterpieces. But like you had accepted, the fact that each one of us have a bunch of songs that would have made our list but still are unable to say anything about this list stands testimony to the Maestro's greatness.

Kumar,
Andhi Mazhai seems to be a overwhelming favorite of many of us. May be I have to hear even more to appreciate the specialty of the song. But other than that, Poomaalaiye ThOl sEravaa was in my list but had to drop it when the 80 min constraint reared its ugly head :) Also had Thene thenpaandi meene in my list but had to omit that bcos the song just pulls the mood of the listener down and I wanted the songs in the list not to have that effect!!

Same here Karthik. I too have so many CDs for the Maestro and these songs are scattered across different CDs. That is one reason why I wanted to come up with such a list in the first place :)

That is a clever idea, Arun but I had to list down some reasons to come up with this list. Plus, I have heard some not-so-great reviews of the iPod transmitter.
