Dasavatharam - A Disaster of Epic Proportions

Let me see where I can start - right when the movie was announced where it was revealed that Kamal will come in 10 roles, I was never even remotely looking forward to this movie. I have never been a big fan of Kamal's make-up adventures. So, naturally, the very thought of Kamal in various prosthetic makeups completely put me off and I had already stopped looking forward to the movie. And when the audio & later the trailer was released a month back, I was like 'Seriously, is this what they could come up with after 2 years of filming?' To say the songs were terrible, would be an understatement. Kamal's movies usually have some pretty good songs and I can't recall the last movie of Kamal that had such awful songs. So, as I entered the movie hall tonight, I was going in with relatively less expectations since IMO, there has not been a perfect Kamal movie since Mahanadhi happened all those years ago.

The movie actually started off in an interesting fashion though one had to read the subtitles to understand what was going on. I couldn't decipher what most of them were talking. But after a few minutes into the movie as the other roles were introduced, it became such a pain to watch Kamal come in every single important role in the movie. Seriously, there was no reason for him to come in this many roles except of course, to fulfill his thirst for wasting another producer's hard-earned money. Plus, the terrible make-ups didn't help either. One had to cringe when some of the make-ups were shown in close-ups. If you thought Indian thaathaa was bad, get ready to face Kamal's version of George Bush & Fletcher. Indian was released more than a decade ago and if a movie that is released all these years later could not even match 50% of the makeup success that was accomplished in Indian, it speaks so badly about the main in charge - Kamal himself.

The biggest problem for me with the movie was that it does not fall under any genre. Is this another full-fledged comedy from the KSR-Kamal combination, much like Thenali & Panchathanthiram? NO. Is this an action thriller that keeps the viewer at the edge of his seat throughout the movie, with a crisp screenplay? NO. Is this some serious movie that conveys some sort of message to us, as to why and whether God exists? NO. Is this a movie that was made to fulfill Kamal's egoistic ambitions to be the first actor to don 10 roles? heck, YES.

The screenplay was terrible, to say the least. Characters and incidents come & go for no reason whatsoever. It looked like Kamal had watched movies like Babel and Crash, one too many times. There were times when there will be a sequence that will evince interest in us and make us look forward to the following scenes. But then, you will be left disappointed bcos Kamal had other important things to do - introduce the next of his 10 useless avathaars. The dialogs were pathetic with the conversation between Kamal & Asin in the climax taking the cake. The Balram Naidu character was the only one that had some funny dialogs but even they were lost in this huge mess that Kamal had created in the name of screenplay. The jokes just did not stick in the overall narrative of the movie. After seeing this, one only hoped that K.S.Ravikumar had been given a free hand in the making of this movie, for one can see Kamal's finger prints in just about anything and everything in the movie.

If this is what Kamal can conjure up after 2 years, there is only 1 conclusion that one can arrive at - he has completely lost it and he has become too egoistic to even put himself in the shoes of the Tamil film watching public. The song 'Ulaganaayagane' was such a turn-off for me with the song's lyrics going to ridiculous levels in praising the actor. I thought this amount of self-praise was only to be seen in Thalaivar's movies. I guess, I am wrong.

He did not have many opportunities to show off his acting skills but in the couple of scenes where he did get them, he did his job. When an actor invests so much energy and time into a movie, that has to be appreciated, no matter who it is. And here, it is pretty clear that he has put in so much effort into this movie but when the output is so bad, it hurts and eventually you start feeling sorry for the guy. As Kamal's make-up procedures were paraded as the end credits rolled, only one thought flashed my mind "All that hard work for this?"

Now to the rest of the cast - there is not much to write about if every freaking role after another is done by Kamal. Asin was plain annoying. When Asin uttered her first dialog as the 12th century Nambi's wife, the whole theater just erupted in laughter. Her voice was ridiculous. But if you thought her modern day avathar will fare better, you were wrong. Her antics became plain irritating as the movie progressed that it was a torture to sit through an already boring & long movie. Napolean, Jayapradha, Mallika Sherawat all came & went in some insignificant roles. Even Kamal's usual favorites like Nagesh, Santhana Bharathi come in miniscule roles that one will miss if you were not paying attention.

Technically, the movie is such a big letdown. That was one aspect I thought the movie will not disappoint, given the budget that went into the making of this movie. And boy, was I wrong. The CGI scenes that all the web sites were hyping about were pukeworthy. There is a scene that comes at the beginning of the movie where Kamal would be tied to Vishnu's idol and would be taken through a backwater into the sea. The backwater in that scene was done through CG and it looked so bad that even a child can make it out that CG had been used. The tsunami scene, that was so much talked about, turned out to be a damp squib. Most of the scenes where more than 1 Kamal was in the screen, they appeared so tacky and made-up. The fights were plain bad and stupid, with people walking out of some terrible car crashes as though nothing had happened. I know, we all have seen this in so many movies but in this movie, it has been taken to a whole new level to the point of making the viewer stupid. In all this mess, one has to point the few positives in the movie - Ravi Varman's camera work and the art direction. They both were really outstanding.

If you are a Thalaivar fan, I would say - go watch it!! Seriously, all those times when during the Thalaivar - Kamal fights, the Kamal fans ridiculed us about the illogical scenes in Thalaivar's movies. Take heart, as this movie has loads and loads of the very same stupid and illogical scenes, that would make even a Vijayakanth film look better. The scene where the bullet takes away the cancerous growth in the Sardar Kamal's throat is the hands down winner and brought the loudest cheers from the audience. So, again, I request you to watch this movie and when you do go, take along a few other Thalaivar fans. I can gaurantee pure fun in the screening, just like me as I went with 3 other Thalaivar fans.

For Kamal fans, I am sure this is one huge embarrassment and its every bit of their worst night mares coming true. I mean, to have waited for this bunch of crap for 2 long years, I am sure every one of his fans will be devastated.

If you thought Aalavandhaan was one of the worst movies of Kamal, wait till you watch this one. It is THAT bad. But unlike many who usually want their money back when a movie disappoints like this, I didn't care one bit, for I had fulsome entertainment ridiculing the movie, which it thoroughly deserves.

And thanks for pointing out the mistake. I meant to say, Nagesh. Corrected the post just now.

Filby,

Though I was not much disappointed, I agree that this movie is not worth the unbelievable hype. What's more unbelievable is the amount of praise the movie gets in some of the reviews.

Surprisingly, Sify's review is pretty good.

Senthil, can't agree more on how some reviews are praising this movie to the sky, particularly the Rediff review. I mean, has that guy even seen any good movie? He says that the special effects are of international standards. I am sure Rediff might have been paid something under the table :)

Sify review was surprisingly honest!! But even they had praised the special effects which left me wondering if I saw the same movie that these guys saw :)

Hmm - I was anticipating an unbiased review. I guess that is not possible with such attachment to thalaivar. So, in effect, this is a rival fan's review - especially held in contrast with your review of Sivaji! I can understand someone being put-off by egotistical self-portrayals. But then, shouldn't that yardstick be consistent across heroes? You seem to be jubilant when that self portrayal is of Rajini and totally repulsed when it is of anyone else!

How come you don't even mention anything about the main strengths of the movie - story and kamal's acting? My two-line impression of the movie is this: "An excellent story and actor affected by market compromises, poor technique and ego. This story should have been made in Hollywood with a director whom Kamal can't influence."

PS: "Hey Ram", "Anbe Sivam" and "Virumaandi" were all released after Mahanadhi FYI!

Hola..good you are back to blogging and hearty congrats on your marriage and best wishes for ur married life...well on Dasa, i will say i liked movie in the sense of itz own very little ways of touching upon certain issues (and heck due to some time constraints this was the tamil movie i watched in a big screen of the late 3 months and may be that made me like whatever was on screen). What kamal or in general kamal nala virumbihal expect is that we be intelligent when they are supposedly intelligent and they ll assume otherwise the viewers will be a moron. they don't appreciate a inclusive audience at all levels and the reason for that well hell mayy be that bloated ego of his. but still we can't deny the hard work put behind this movie. it is a different matter fr what reason it was.

Hi! I just happened to see your review. I think your comments are totally biased. I'm not a Kamal/Rajni fan. But I love to watch their movies. I thought, Dasavataram was a pretty good movie definitely worth watching it. Except for that Muslim & Sikh Kamal, all other avatars were great. I agree that some makeups looked flaky & visual effects was a letdown and they could've cut down the movie to 2.5 hrs instead of 3 hrs as it seemed to drag in the 2nd half. But the overall movie theme & how the events unfold certainly keep you interested in the movie. btw, there have been handful number of great Kamal's movies after Mahanadi...Avvai Shanmugi, Hey Ram, Tenali, Virumandi to name a few. Overall, it was a good movie, worth watching in theater once (just like Sivaji). Thanks.

Eashwar - I beg to disagree. i agree there were flaws in this movie - There were a few good scenes in the movie and then the rest were full of flaws. Plus, production quality wise, I think Sivaji was way better than what we got to see here.

Theriyala SK, this was not really a biased review. All my reviews (except the ones for Thalaivar movies, of course) are unbiased. I guess, the main reason for the harsh tone of this review is bcos of the hype that was built up by everyone involved in the movie (Kamal included)

About me being put-off by egotistical self-portrayals in this movie and not in a Thalaivar movie- I am fine with such scenes in a Thalaivar movie. But when someone ridicules us for that and when their favorite actor movie has an even more loads of it, then I guess it is only natural that I am put off and more importantly, get agitated by the same.

Having said all that, I do kind of agree with your 2-line about the movie except for the 'excellent story' part :)

About not mentioning any of these 3 movies you have mentioned - that is why I included the word 'perfect'! IMHO, Anbe Sivam came close to it but I cannot even remotely call Hey Ram and Virumaandi perfect :)

Naren, I am surprised that you liked the movie, though your explanation kinda makes sense. Though I can appreciate the efforts that have went behind this movie, I just cannot stand Kamal's ego going for a full-throttled ride in the name of Dasavatharam (which you put it mildly in your comment)

And thanks for the wishes!! Hopefully should keep blogging at a regular pace.

Anon, like I said above in response to another comment, this is definitely not a biased review, though it is coming from a hard-core Rajini fan. I do like Kamal and admire his works and even look forward to his mvies. But then, anybody would be put off on seeing Kamal overshadow an otherwise interesting storyline, just so that he can satisfy his giant-size ego.

IMO, only the Nambi and Govind characters needed Kamal to have played those roles. The problem with Dasavatharam for folks like us who don't have iota of interest in Kamal's makeup fetish, is that it lacked a decent storyline & a taut screenplay and hence it is no wonder that it is being panned by critics all around.

And from your list, please remove Thenali since it is almost a frame-by-frame remake of All About Bob.

Illa-da Deepak, I dont think that the review is biased. Tell me that my Thalaivar movie reviews are biased and I will agree. But this one was genuine. may be the harsh tone of the review gave you that impression but the main reason for that kind of a tone was the pre-release hype given to the movie.

I am actually surprised that you liked this one more than Sivaji :) The jarring special effects and Kamal's omnipresence in every frame just made watching this movie a forgettable experience.

I visited this site based on a reply by Sureshkumar in his blog. However, after reading the Dasavatharam movie review I can understand now that you are one lopsided person who doesn't know how to appreciate a movie. There should be neutrality in review but it is not there with you as openly admitted with your reference of "Thalaivar" for Rajini. Both follow different schools. To say this make-up is bad is bad understanding.

Part of the make-up is giving shapes to the face itself. I think Kamal has tried that in this movie. If you call this movie is an ego attempt, then I have to look at the dictionary to describe the full movie of self-praise contained in Baba, which was the main reason it flopped.

I saw the movie without any expectation and I was very satisfied with the acting. During the time I was watching the movie I never felt I was watching the same man doing many roles.

The only area where your review stands 100% correct is on Asin's acting. She was pathetic in the movie.

As an Iyengar I really really enjoyed the role of Krishnaveni patti as also I enjoyed the Thiruma like Dalit leader role.

To me each role was very painstakingly differentiated.

Perception differs, Sathyamurthy. That is all I have to say about your comment.

Myself calling the Superstar as Thalaivar does not have anything to do with what I felt about this movie. My reviews for movies that I dislike are usually this harsh. Check out my Anniyan review if you have some time and you will understand what I am talking about. If you call my review biased, what would you say about the countless reviews by Kamal fans (of all people) which simply thrashed the movie, even worse than what I have done here. People who even liked Aalavandhaan and Mumbai Express have felt that this movie is terrible. That should say something.

About the make-up - I think I have seen enough movies to understand what a good make-up is and I will stick to that. Kamal romba kashtapattu make-up ellaam pOttaaru-ngradhukkaaga, I cannot appreciate mediocrity.

Schumi Fan, loved both your posts on Kamal's inspirations and on this fateful movie called Dasavatharam, especially the 3rd paragraph of your review which hits the nail as to why Kamal is a confused film-maker.

That Kamal inspirations post is pretty comprehensive that listed all of the ones that I knew of and some more :) Like I have always felt, he needs a good director who can reign him in and that is when we will get to see the next Kamal movie that is complete in every sense. Until then, it is only craps like Dasavatharam that we will be getting served :)

Your thought about him needing a good director is right, but his ego is so high that he thinks he makes better movies and decsions than even some hollywood directors. He fails to credit his source of inspiration and he always boasts about having imagined his scripts decades ago. Dear Filbert,

Thanks for the reply posted for my comment.

I understand that you cannot appreciate mediocrity. But in the same breathe you appreciate Rajinikant as Thalaivar (How that word suits him? Is it pyramid of excellence?).

Is he promoting excellence? Being a critic is easy. If you have doubts, watch Mel Brooks - History of the World Part II.

We like and call someone as Thalaivar who keeps propogating Male Chauvenistic ideas in the movies aka MGR just to show that he is the Boss. So it is a woman who will dream about getting laid and kissed by a man in a "Thalaivar" Rajnikant movie and "Thalaivar" will give sermons to all.

To top it all, dialogues like, "Singam Singula thaan varum" and crap like Sivaji that had scenes like Sivaji coming alive after being electocuted and coming back as another man (where are the DNA tests? Oh, we can't do that as then it will become inspiration from Hollywood movie).

To top it all the crap called Sivaji had no timeline at all for the story - was the story happening in one year? three years? twenty years? What work did Rajnikant do in USA to earn Rs.150 crores? He looked pretty young for his 55+ years in the movie so he can dance around with Shreya (19?). So he must be 23 or 26 years of age in the movie. So how he earned Rs.150 crores in USA? May be he unearthed black money from his own asset base of real life.

Since you are the Archagar of Excellence - you must know all these too. But since you are unbiased you should have written about these also since you have the self claim to unbiasedness (like the claim of elimai and ezhai(yin panathil)pangalan image of a real life actor called Rajnikant.

SamAruna,

I would like to answer your questions. The biggest mistake with us Indians is that, when we want to criticize a piece of work, we always have to say that X has its flaws, but is better than Y. Why should a criticism always compare and contrast? This is a criticism of Kamal's Dasavatharam, not a comparison of Sivaji and Dasa.

Coming to your other point, criticism should be focussed to tell people if a piece of work achieved what it intended to do. Rajini's movies are loved by my kid, infact, by all kids. In general Rajini's movies are for the kids in all of us. As fans of him, we ourselves know, he can't act as well as many in the industry, he can't dance (not that it should be a criterion for an actor, IMO), he doesn't look dashing and yes he is old. Inspite of all this, we want to see him, infact millions want to see him. Its not explainable why, but he has a magnetism. He fulfills whta he sets out to do, which is re-kindle the kid in you.

Now Kamal is a different kind of showman, he wants to take Tamil cinema to excellence never seen before. He wants to extract a hollywood kind of standard from this industry. And unfortunately he fails miserably at this.

Criticism addresses whether or not, a piece of work has achieved what it intended to do. And this is what has been precisely done by Filbert.

Start comparing apples to apples and not apples to oranges. I hope you get the point.

Schumi fan(atic)

Good. Yours is a reply I like. I answered specifically about the comment of Filbert on "tolerance for mediocrity" and for that I showed him the apple and orange in his own "Thalaivar" (? how one qualifies these days for Thalaivar position is a mystery, as much a mystery as Rajnikant's acting skill off the screen and his "Natpu and regard" for such openly family peddling CMs as Karunanidhi).

Coming to your point, what do you think is better? To try or not to try? Is it better to fear for failure and not try?

Look around you and tell me how many of the things around you are results of one time tries?

Most likely we ourselves are results of multiple tries and failures by our parents (many a times they might have failed miserably too, before we resulted, good or bad).

Schumi,

On another note, I like Rajni movies. I can appreciate the efforts he has to go thru to show subtle differences in almost similar story lines. He is charismatic. There is a style and force in his acting methods.

That doesn't mean you can go and put Kamal's pictures to level of mediocrity. I have seen several criticisms talking about the amount spent for the movie and the hype etc. Amount spent is with the willingness of the producer and if the producer believed in the story who are we to question that? For all we know the "dubba" story in Sivaji would have miserably failed and it is a God's blessing that such a story clicked. We read news about Rajni being unhappy with Shankar for the money spent on the movie etc. I for one strongly believe that Sivaji was mostly supported by some innovative thinking on the part of Shankar in presentation of Rajni and some rocking music by A R Rahman. However, it is being spoken about by the Rajni fans as though it is only because of one man called Rajni that movie was a success.

Now see what is being written by Filbert for Kuchelan? Its a already hit story in Malayalam and the movie was poetic there. Now, that story would have been gang raped for making it a Rajnikant movie.

To say that he is giving helping hand to KB is utter nonsense. Is it something great? Is KB such a pauper that he needs help? Can he make a movie and build a university where his fan club members and their children study free of cost (aka Sivaji - The Boss?)

Like Schumi Fan noted, comparing Sivaji with Dasavatharam is like comparing apples to oranges. But even if you want to compare, I am ready for that.

For every mistake/ flaw/ logical loophole that you point out in Sivaji, I can point 2 such instances in Dasavatharam. So, let's not go there. Its better not having a timeline in the movie than having one, like in Dasavatharam and leaving gaping holes in adhering to the timeline. Please read Prem Panicker's take on this awful movie where he also talks about the timeline.

http://www.prempanicker.com/index.php?/site/comments/dasavatharam_my_take/

And you very well know what I will bring up (in Dasavatharam) to counter Thalaivar coming back alive that was shown in Sivaji.

If you thought that myself (or for that matter most of Rajini fans) addressing him as Thalaivar is bcos of the gimmicks & dialogs that he does on-screen, then you are sorely mistaken.

About us citing Thalaivar as the sole reason for Sivaji's success - do you frankly think that Sivaji would have been a hit if anybody other than Thalaivar had acted in the movie? It was very obvious that Shankar had altered the screenplay just for the sake of Thalaivar (even a child can say that the movie did not have Shankar's usual water-tight screenplay but then that is the liberty that Shankar could afford bcos of having Thalaivar as the hero) and that itself is proof for the fact that Shankar placed all his faith solely on Thalaivar. And FYI, inspite of ARR's awesome music, many of his films have been box office failures.

About Thalaivar helping KB - it is true. KB himself said that he approached Thalaivar to do a movie for him bcos of his financial trouble. Please read the following link: http://onlysuperstar.blogspot.com/2008/05/yes-i-sought-rajinis-call-sheet-to.html
Why don't other actors who call KB their guru do something for him, with Prakash Raj being the exception?

SamAruna,

Since you yourself have acknowledged the charm of Rajini, lets put that discussion to rest.

Now to the Kamal argument of trying and failing. IMHO, I think that Kamal is over-hyped. He has been trying for a long time and with no success. Thats the reason Filbert mentioned 'Mahanadhi'. Thats a true classic by Kamal, probably the last. If you want to make alist of movies after Mahanadhi, let me stop you right there. Please read my blogpost at: http://greycellfiles.blogspot.com/2006/10/so-much-for-co-incidences.html. I did research a lot to write this blog and stand by my conviction that Kamal is over-hyped. While you are there, also read my review on Dasa. Because of the adulation given to people like Kamal, true creators like Bala, Ameer and even Vetri Maran(of Polladhavan fame) get less attention than they deserve. Our tribe has always been that way. 'Andha Naal', a classic Rashomon-effect movie directed by Vennai Balachandar and Written by Jaavar Seetharaman was ignored in the 40's. We have always ignored good work of art, since we like sensationalism. I dont have more words to describe people who want to acknowledge 'fancy-dress' as the height of performance.

If you still stick by your words about Kamal trying, my reply is that he has been trying too long without any progress. Although trying will be appreciated for a while, results are more emphatic. And please ask him to stop trying with other's money!! Raj Kamal movies never produces any of his 'tryings', only dumb producers who get folled by his 'hyped-intellect' bite the dust. 'Kalaipuli' Dhaanu is a living example of this!!!

To Filbert & Schumi,

Trier will keep trying. Failures do not matter to them. Read about the classic failures who became big successes.

Regarding calling Rajini as Thalaivar, I am not as dumb as a Rajini movie to think that it is because of Sivaji. It is because of appreciation of mediocrity which we accept in India as Thalaivarity! (hows that?).

Rajini is one himalayan(!) lie that goes around acting in public.

I asked you the specific question why KB and why not something for the fans who gave "oru pavun thanga kasu for oru thuli viyarvai".

As true followers of Rajini (the Thalaivar) why don't you both go and give your respective gurus atleast your one month salary?

Rajni dared to take a movie from his own money once and it flopped miserably and after that he started putting the risk on the already paupers so heads he wins and tails the other person loses.

SamAruna, my response about Thalaivar helping KB was bcos of this statement in your comment - Is KB such a pauper that he needs help?

It is a naive question to ask if we will do the same thing to Thalaivar. Nobody here is claiming that he is our guru or mentor or such. We adore him both as a person and as an actor.

I think this discussion is going nowhere and your arguments are getting personal and I try to stay away from that. If you want to discuss my review on Dasavatharam or just the movie itself, I am all for it.

Fibert,

I didn't ask you to give salary to your Thalaivar. I asked you if you would follow your thalaivar to give a month's salary to your Guru (not Rajni, whoever you rever as your guru). If you follow a guy then you refer him as Thalaivar. If the adage is given then it means you follow him. If not, it is just a meaningless adage, like most Rajini movies which do not even start a conversation like this.

I responded this way because of your very personal attack on Kamal calling him mediocre. On the same breathe you accept lie and epitome of mediocrity as Thalaivar. Tragic!

I do not if you have read Fountain Head, but recommend you to read this (its not for self promotion but I truly believe in what you will find there):

Someone has to try and fail for someone else to learn and succeed.

SamAruna, I think you missed the whole point about giving back to someone's guru. I don't have anyone as my guru or mentor but if I have one who is in a crisis (just like KB was, as he himself accepted), I would definitely do my best to help him out, if at all I were in a position to do that.

FYI, I did not call Kamal, the person mediocre and that is why I precisely said that I want to stay away from such comments. All of which I wrote in my review was about the "movie" that Kamal, the actor/ maker gave us.

I am not an avid reader and thus haven't read Fountain Head. But like you, so many people have recommended the book to me. I will surely try to give it a read asap.

I suffered being an idealist: Kamal
18 Jul 2008, 0002 hrs IST, BVS PRAKASH Times News Network ,TNN
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India_Buzz/I_suffered_being_an_idealist__Kamal/articleshow/3246107.cms

Kamal Haasan bounces back in Telugu with a sensational hit Dasavatharam.

He claims to have consciously dished out an entertainer to reach out to a wider section of the audience rather than chasing critical acclaim. His ten roles reflect the varied shades of human mind unlike the mythological Dasavatharam. He quotes Emmanuel Kant for a peaceful life and describes his next Marmayogi as a periodic epic. Excerpts from an interview :

You succeeded in winning audience appreciation but you seem to have disappointed some critics? Unlike mythological Dasavatharam, it seems that your ten roles reflect varied shades of human mind?
From the outset we had resolved to reach out to wider section of the audience and our confidence stands vindicated. We consciously overlooked the views of so-called pundits to churn out an entertainer. Again my belief that the audience would definitely patronise anything unique has been strengthened and actually they have raised the bar of expectations. We intended to explore shades of complex human mind. Haven't we seen a baddy like Fletcher, idealist, activist and even a fun-making cop around us. Apparently even the audience related to the real-life characters making it a success. I would have made some mistakes in the film but I will keep committing them since we don't possess sure-fire formula for success. I wanted the film to be more like a 'cocktail discussion'.

You were cynical about tyrant rulers, nature's design to evaporate vial with tsunami and re-uniting soul-mates?
Instead of individuals, I was more cynical about the rulers' obsession to force their fanatic ideas upon their subjects. Because social revolution cannot happen overnight and sometimes it could take few generations to achieve it. So saint Mahavir's ‘Live and let live' idea remains the best approach. Coming to resolution, instead of being so cruel, nature could have chosen a wiser option to end the bio-menace. Re-uniting soul-mates after making them go through tough times and death of idealistic activist is part of its crude design.

Do you suggest that idealistic people cannot survive in the world? How can the world be peaceful then?
That’s true. It is very difficult for an idealist to survive in this selfish world until he develops a strong instinct to live. Personally, I suffered being an idealist but I am alive because of my daunting spirit. It is difficult but not impossible. Even Jesus was crucified before his thoughts were clearly understood. For a peaceful world, philosopher Emmanuel Kant’s thoughts can be remembered "Extract maximum pleasure from the earth with minimum pain to it and its inhabitants'. Even our epics had pragmatic thoughts but interpreters twisted it serving us 'bottled juice' and not a fresh one.

Can you elaborate on your next film Maramayogia?
It’s too early to divulge more details except for describing it as a '7th century periodic epic' in a nutshell. The big-budget entertainer will be a feast for all sections of the audience. It will go on floors from August

Filbert i think you are not a good movie reviwer. i thinkk balaji is much more sensible & one of the best.

you are too biased, i can't understand when the whole world praises A.R.Rahman & Kamal hassan about their talents & you seems to have a problem about them. i have never seen you admiring them.

You are crazy about the average Yuvna instead of the greatest music director india has ever seen A.R. Rahman.

being a sri lankan i really admire indian movie talents. but i find very sad that some of the indians do have a problem in thier own talent admiring.

How come Dsavatharam is A Disaster of Epic Proportions but still it made money more than any other movie & second only to Shivaji.
According to behindwoods, shivaji made 11 crore alone in chennai & so far Dasavatharam has made 9.44crores on the 6 week (http://www.behindwoods.com/tamil-movies-slide-shows/movie-2/top-ten-movies/tamil-cinema-topten-movie-dasavatharam.html.)

we all enjoyed the movie which is completely different from the usual boy meets girl routine we have see.

now you have a problem when Kamal experiment. You seems to like movies thats are safe bet. Kamal is an actor who likes to swim against the tide everytime. Dasavatharam is a great movie. How come it became a bad movie for you. 93% of viewers comments i've seen on sify, rediff & behindwoods admit that this is a great movie.

After mahanadhi we had Kuruthipunal, Indian, Devar Magan, Avvai Shanmugi, Anbe Sivam & the best comedy ive seen for years Tenali. Where have you being after Mahanadi, in a different planet or wut. I cant undestand that you couldnt admire these movies.

HI Filbert,

You have painted a very bad picture about the movie dasavatharam which is completely bisassed and untrue.

First of all the ten characters were 10 avatars of Vishnu and everything had its own explanation...From your comments it is clearly understood that you have not understood the movie.

FYI Kamal had to monologue for most of the scenes and it took him hours for the make up and it's not easy playing ten different characters. It's very easy to sit and criticise but i think buddy u need to understand the pain involved in making a movie...

And yeah I guess ur just another rajini fan who looks at larger than life. For god's sake what was there in Shivaji. It was the most ridiculous and sickest movie to have been ever made. There was no story and it was all about Rajini. Rajini lives with a formula and he is really afraid of experimenting. He does not have any courage whatso ever and he just cant act. And yes if you say Kamal is ego centric what about Rajini. If you want I can show examples of Kamal's movies where the other characters get their share and have a chance to perform, but barring Padayappa all the Rajinikanth movie is about glorifying him and only him.

Kamal has taken Indian cinema to an international arena but sadly rajini is still wooing heroines bashing up 100 heroes single handed and running around trees. For god's sake ask him to stop it. It was all over in the 80's Time to move Forward buddy......
